Headache? Could Weather Be the Cause?

When a headache strikes, it can appear to be completely random, making it really difficult to pinpoint the cause. But, did you know that the weather could be the reason you are reaching for the headache pills?

Weather changes can occur quite quickly and the related pressure, humidity or heat can cause a headache to appear seemingly out of the blue. Whether you are suffering from daily headaches or really severe headaches on a regular basis, it might be worth checking the weather report to see if the weather is causing your pain.

How Can the Weather Cause Headaches?

A headache is essentially an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. For some people, these imbalances can be a result of weather changes.

Common weather triggers include:

  • humid weather
  • bright sunlight
  • stormy or windy weather
  • extreme hot or cold temperatures
  • barometric pressure changes
  • dry air

How Can A Weather Related Headache Be Treated?

Weather related headaches are hard to avoid, but you can do some things to ensure they are less likely to affect your daily life so much. Here is some advice from the experts at New Jersey Headache Institute:

  • Look out for weather changes that might be likely to affect you.  if you are not sure what these are, a headache diary could help you to keep track of the weather systems that are causing your pain. Keep a record of when your headache started and a little symbol or note to show what the weather was like at the time. Over time, you may just start to see a pattern forming.
  • try to avoid triggers as much as you can.  Of course, you can avoid going outside or living your life. Weather is always going to be there but, you can ensure you have pain relief handy  or at the very least know that you might experience a headache.
