The Side Effects of Taking Too Much Aspirin

Maribel Cordova-Ramirez - Monday, March 13, 2017

Are you taking aspirin regularly for your chronic headaches?

If so, you should be aware of the side effects of too much aspirin. Aspirin can be useful as a pain reliever that helps stop brief, mild headaches. However, many people with severe headaches mistakenly take aspirin, hoping it will help them. When headaches are caused by underlying medical issues, aspirin is not much good. Too much of it can even be dangerous.

How Much Aspirin Is Too Much? Dangers of Overdose

Two types of overdose might take place when taking aspirin regularly:

Acute Overdose

Acute overdose happens if you accidentally take too much aspirin at one time. It leads to stomach upset, pain, nausea and vomiting. The severe irritation of the stomach lining can cause ulcers to develop. Permanent damage to the gastrointestinal tract is possible.

In cases of acute overdose, it’s essential to seek medical care right away. The overdose can be fatal, and symptoms like hyperventilation, double vision and fainting can make it hard to seek help. A Poison Control Center may be able to offer first-aid advice.

Seizures may occur in the worst cases. Without treatment, the victim may slip into a coma.

Chronic Overdose

A chronic overdose happens over a long period of time, as aspirin builds up in the body. The symptoms tend to be long-lasting, severe and systemic – potentially resulting in organ damage or failure. Compared to acute overdose, chronic overdose has some unusual symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Accelerated heart rate
  • A mild fever
  • Collapse

Older people are particularly at risk of a chronic overdose. It can take place in cases where the victim has undiagnosed kidney, liver or other organ problems. These make it difficult for the body to process aspirin effectively.

Protect Your Health – Go Beyond Aspirin and Truly Eliminate Headache Pain

Aspirin is a reasonable choice for temporary relief of modest pain, but most people suffering chronic headaches won’t get much benefit from it. You don’t need a temporary fix – you want a permanent solution to headache pain.

The key? Professional diagnosis by true headache experts, who can determine the source of the problem. When the real cause of severe headaches is known, a customized treatment plan can substantially reduce the pain – and often, eliminate it for good.
